In 1836, the town of Spring was established in Harrisburg municipality by the Texas General Council. During the mid-19th century, German immigrants began settling in the area in large numbers. Some of the most notable of these migrants were Carl Wunsche and Gus Bayer, both of which established large farms in the area. Additionally, at the end of the Civil War, many veterans along with their families moved to Spring from southeastern states such as Louisiana. They, too, established farms, with the primary cash crops being cotton and sugar cane, as well as some vegetables. In 1871, Spring began to expand with the arrival of the International & Great Northern Railroad. With this expansion came more residents, two steam saws, two grist mills, two cotton gins, and several schools and other public services.
