The 14,000-acre master-planned residential community of Kingwood is situated in the northeastern portion of Houston and is the largest of its kind in Montgomery County. Furthermore, it is the 2nd largest of the ten counties that comprise the greater Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area. While a large part of Kingwood is located inside Harris County, some of it is also in Montgomery County. In 1971, Kingwood was established as a joint project by King Ranch and Friendswood Development Company; thus its name is derived from that business partnership. Before the development began, the land was owned by the Foster Lumber Company, which was formed by the Foster family in 1829. The Fosters sold the property to King Ranch and Friendswood Development Company in 1967. Friendswood was a subsidiary of Standard Oil Company, now Exxon. The oil company hired a man by the name of John Bruton Jr. to serve as the company’s Operations Manager, placing him in charge of planning, developing, engineering, and eventual construction of Kingwood. Bruton was the one who drew up the plans for green belts, schools, shopping centers, churches, riding and hiking trails, recreation facilities, as well as a boat ramp that gave residents access to Lake Houston.
