The City of Montgomery is situated in the northwestern part of Montgomery County. It is also a member of the Greater Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metro Area. In July 1837, W. W. Sheppard founded the town of Montgomery in the middle of the Lake Creek Settlement, which was a part of Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony. The 200-acre tract was initially a part of the John Corner League, W. W. Sheppard and his close associate, John Wyatt Moody, were the ones who named the town “Montgomery.” The County of Montgomery was established on December 14, 1837, and Montgomery the city became its first county seat the same year. Historians hold the view that both the city and county were named for Andrew Montgomery and his brother, Owen Montgomery, some of the first settlers to establish themselves in the area of modern-day Montgomery. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown stronger proof towards the once less held opinion that they were named after Major Lemuel P. Montgomery, who fought in the Creek War. Historians Carrol Cagle and Kameron Searle conducted the study, coming to a conclusion that a John Wyatt Moody, a Montgomery County clerk, and previously from Montgomery, Alabama, as well, suggested the name. Montgomery, Alabama, is named after Major Montgomery.
