The City of Richmond was incorporated way back in 1837 and is located in the County of Fort Bend and is its county seat. It is also a member of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metro Area and has a modest population of approximately 12,000. The history of Richmond started in 1822 when a group of settlers from Austin traveled up the Brazos River and stopped in the proximity of present-day Richmond. They ended up building a fort there and named it “Fort Bend.” Upon the establishment Richmond, it was decided to name it after the English town of Richmond. It was one of the first 19 communities to be incorporated by the Republic of Texas. Many of the first residents of Richmond became prominent figures in Texas’ history. Some of these people include Mirabeau Lamar, Deaf Smith, and Jane Long, all of which are buried in Richmond. On August 16, 1889, the Battle of Richmond took place here. The battle was a part of the Jaybird-Woodpecker War, a petty feud that took place before the Reconstruction of Fort Bend County.
