The census-designated place (CDP) of Spring is located in the territorial jurisdiction of Houston. It is also a member of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metro Area. Now called Old Town Spring, the original townsite is located at the intersection of Hardy and Spring-Cypress Roads, encompassing only a small area that is approximately .62 miles squared. Nevertheless, the expansion of Spring’s boundaries has led to a population that reaches about 54,000 people. Before Europeans came to the area, the Orcoquisac Native Americans inhabited this region. Once Spring had been established, a man named William Pierpont built a trading post on Spring Creek. By the mid-19th century, German immigrants had begun to flood Spring and the areas surrounding it. Two of those German migrants were Carl Wunsche and Gus Bayer, two farmers whose cash crops were cotton and sugarcane. Other settlers also grew vegetables. The International and Great Northern Railroad began running through Spring in 1871, leading the area towards expansion. Once expansion started, Spring never stopped growing.
